Firstly, thank you to everyone who has signed up to ParaDoxa over the last week.
The response from people has been humbling.
Here are a couple of bits of news:
Ignore requests to pay for the site
Apparently, ParaDoxa invite you to sign up with a message asking if you’d like to support the site financially. I don’t see these messages and they’re not sent from me. Please ignore them. If I ever decide to open up paid subscriptions, it will only be when people have had a good chance to see the work I’m doing and make an informed choice.
Substack — the platform ParaDoxa uses — does not use advertising, which is one of the things I love about it. But its organisation and upkeep is funded by top-slicing from paid subscriptions, so they naturally look for ways to make that happen. But that’s for some time in the future for me. I’ll keep you posted.
The first big new thing — podcast interviews
In an hour’s time, you’ll get a notice of the first of a regular series of interviews I’ll be running with fascinating people in post-critical healthcare. The first one is with the very wonderful Prof Barbara Gibson. New ones will appear every four to six weeks on the site and, as always, subscribers will get the episodes sent directly to their email inbox.
Please pass ParaDoxa on
Which is a good reminder to ask you to pass ParaDoxa on to anyone you think would be interesting in new thinking in the philosophy and sociology of healthcare. There are so many people I couldn’t reach with my mailouts, so I’d be hugely thankful for your help in spreading the word.
Postmodernism on Daily Philosophy
Late last week I was contacted by Dr Andreas Matthias, the editor of a sister Substack publication Daily Philosphy, asking if I could write something about postmodernism. Daily Philosophy has a large subscriber base, but most of the readers are from the analytic philosophy tradition, and find postmodernism perplexing. So, I’ve been working on a piece about how continental philosophies think radically differently about things like movement and time. I’ll post the finished piece up on ParaDoxa too when its done.
And what’s coming up
I’m currently working on two big-ish pieces for the site: one making a case for posthumanism and why it’s becoming increasingly relevant to healthcare, and another on a postmodern reading of the recent phenomenon of ChatGPT. They’ll be coming out in the next few weeks.
So, I hope you’re enjoying the site and finding it fun and interesting. It’s always lovely reading people’s thoughts, comments and suggestions, so please keep them coming. And, as always, if there’s something not working for you, just email me directly at david.nicholls@aut.ac.nz.
Talks soon,
Dave
Thanks for the update, Dave. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on ChatGPT.
Thanks for mentioning Daily Philosophy, Dave! Looking forward to the article on postmodernism!
